When we hear the word ‘God the Father’ instantly we picture a grand old man with a flowing snowy white beard, always up in the heavens and keeping a constant watch over us. But, what do we profess about this God the Father in the profession of faith? In the Apostle’s Creed we say “I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth”, and in the Nicene Creed we say “I believe in one God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible”.
In the famous story of Moses and the burning bush (Exo. 3:14) God reveals His name to Moses ‘I am who I am’. This name for God means that God alone IS, that he is perfection of all that is and needs nothing else to be. In fact, God keeps the entire universe in existence at every moment. God is addressed as the Father, in part because of his active interest in human affairs, in the way that a father would take interest in his children who are dependent on him and as a father, he will respond to humanity, his children, acting in their best interests.
God’s plan is that we spend eternity joyfully in perfect union with him. The world was created by God out of nothing, but by his wisdom and love he made it complete. Jesus revealed that God is Father in an unheard of sense: he is Father not only in being Creator; he is eternally Father in relation to his only Son, who is eternally Son only in relation to his Father.
